Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Jon Huntsman - A fan of Neptune Cafe, here.  I found this article with a link to Jon Huntsman's birth certificate, showing his birth time at 11:58 am... Your chart is not far off. I am very involved with politics and love astrology, so I enjoy your analysis.

re: NewsScope  - Excellent column this week (July 11, 2011). All 3 articles are well written and well chosen.

re: NewsScope - thank you for your fantastic website and also for your Newscopes.

Q.  I wonder would you consider commenting on the precious metals, gold and silver, as well as in general about the commodity cycles with the economic cycles. In particular, what about the fiat currency future and the ever non stop debate of inflation or deflation cycles that we are having or going to have in the next few years.

re: NewsScope - Keep up the great work. Love your site!

Q. As far as I know you have never presented a horoscope for the U.S. FDA. Would you by any chance have such a chart? It is relevant now because the FDA is hell bent on destroying all our freedom to be healthy. They now have a proposed set of guidelines, which they introduced on July 1st, to try to ban as many nutritional supplements as they can.

re: economy - June was looking grim for the US ecomomy until last week when the Greek debt crisis was smoothed over and Wall Street took off on a tear. I'm thinking the optimism is premature since Saturn is still squaring the US Sun as well as the worldwide influence of Pluto square Uranus. I did notice Jupiter in Taurus is opposite the ascendant in the Scorpio rising US chart you favor.  Perhaps the optimistic feeling is short-lived since the Saturn, Pluto, and Uranus transits last much longer than the Jupiter effect.

more on the economy - Now, we are watching the slow demise of the capitalized world.  Yes, it will fall, the question before us is whether it will be a slow demise or a CRASH heard round the world.  That has yet to be determined.  But Greece will go into bankrupt sooner or later, I predict much sooner than most of us anticipate. My sincere suggestion is that you visit Bill Herbst's website and read the two articles he has posted there in PDF form this month as well as some of the older essays he has written on global events and the economy both past and present.

thx - Thanks for your wonderful column.  DSK post, and others, fascinating.

Q. - Tangential fun side questions:  Chelsey?  Pippa"!
Keep up your good work!

re: Federer - I just looked at Federer natal chart and couldn't believe that someone with this kind of fame and success is born with the Sun in house XII and doesn't even have one planet in house X!

A. Well, he is a Leo, and it's hard to keep a strong Leo out of the limelight. Notice that he has a formidable Jupitrer-Saturn in the 2nd house of money closely trine the MC. This helps build his career and promises financial security (wealth even) in the process.

Eric Cantor’s Conflict of Interest

One of the principle political foes to raising the debt ceiling is House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the Republican congressman from Virginia. Cantor pressured Speaker John Boehner to back out of Obama’s grand bargain arrangement with the mantra “no new taxes”. Although Cantor publicly criticizes the Democrats’ desire to raise taxes on small businesses, his primary benefactors are Wall Street banks and fat cat billionaires.
Cantor’s horoscope (June 6, 1963; Richmond, VA; time unknown) helps us understand why he’s so unyielding on the federal debt. Mercury, the ruler of his Gemini Sun, is in stubborn Taurus and hardened by a square to Saturn. This fixed sign signature reveals an unshakeable resolve in his political views. His Mars-Uranus conjunction in Virgo further indicates a tough political fighter, as evidenced by his founding role in the GOP Young Guns Program.

Cantor’s Venus is also in Taurus and square Saturn, giving him a formidable financial prowess. It’s made him one of the GOP’s top fundraisers, having raised some $30 million for the Republican Party. Since Venus and Mercury are conjunct, his political opinions (Mercury) are influenced by his financial ties (Venus).
As reported in the Huffington Post, Cantor opposes closing corporate tax loopholes because corporate tax dodgers are among his top campaign donors.

When transiting Jupiter and Chiron were forming a conjunction in Aquarius in December 2009, they activated Cantor’s Mercury-Venus-Saturn configuration. At the time, Cantor bought $15,000 worth of an ultra-short Treasury ETF, which is a big bet against U.S. government bonds. If the U.S. defaults on its debt this coming August 2, Cantor’s shares will skyrocket in value. Small wonder he’s doing his best to obstruct any deal.
The Mercury-Neptune Smokescreen

Jupiter aligning with the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant in two weeks suggests that at least a temporary fix to the debt ceiling crisis will be found. Mercury turns retrograde in Virgo on August 2, celestially marking the deadline. What makes this Mercury station fascinating is that it’s in a close opposition to Neptune. Normally, Mercury in Virgo is characterized by logic and keen analysis, but with Neptune’s influence, reason may be thrown out the window.
Mercury will make three oppositions to Neptune over the next two months. The exact hits are on July 28, August 8, and September 8. The Mercury-Neptune vibe is especially strong from July 27 through August 9, undoubtedly leaving many people with deep feelings of doubt and insecurity.

Astrologer Sue Tomkins (Aspects in Astrology) refers to the Mercury-Neptune aspect as glamorizing information, and raising gossip and scandal to an art-form. She further characterizes the hard Mercury-Neptune aspect as being self-deceptive and as distorting anything that approaches the real truth.

Astrologer Adrian Ross Duncan (Astrology: Transformation & Empowerment) calls this aspect the “smokescreen”, and that people under this influence “avoid the unpalatable and believe what they want to believe.” Additional phrases he uses to describe this aspect include real dishonesty, secret world of untruth, and feeling disoriented.
Clearly we are entering a period when knowing what is real and what is not will be difficult to discern. Those with planets in the last degree of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) or the first degree of the mutables (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) will be most distracted by this transiting Mercury-Neptune polarity. While the U.S. has no natal planets in these degrees, it has many important midpoints there. The nation is heading into a cloud of uncertainty.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony Split

Last week, in a surprise announcement, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony issued a joint statement saying they were separating. The couple gave no hint that they were considering this step, having led a seemingly romantic and business partnership for the last seven years. However, the astrological indicators have been evident, as noted in this column one year ago (August 2, 2010).
Both Jennifer and Marc (September 16, 1969) have Juno in early Capricorn. Generally, Juno in Capricorn signifies a strong commitment to the institution of marriage. However, in both their charts, Juno squares Uranus, which represents an internal conflict between partnership and independence needs. Since transiting Uranus entered Aries in March, it’s activated their natal Juno-Uranus dynamic, leading to a sudden shift in priorities.

Another cycle they’re sharing is the infamous “seven-year itch”. They were married on June 5, 2004 when Saturn was at 12º Cancer. Seven years later, Saturn at 12º Libra is squaring their marriage Saturn. Evidently, they’ve been having doubts for some time, since Saturn has already transited this critical degree twice over the last eight months. But Saturn in Libra excels at putting on a pleasant façade. Only the astrologers weren’t fooled.
Jennifer Lopez (July 24, 1969; New York, NY; time unknown) is currently undergoing several classic astrological cycles that often lead to separation. The one mentioned last year is her progressed Venus squaring natal Saturn. The challenging Venus-Saturn connection is the love-tester. Often, business or financial concerns become paramount, and in this respect it’s noteworthy that the IRS recently declared that Marc owed $3.4 million in unpaid taxes.

on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."
