Bernadette Brady
on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."

Demetra George
on asteroids

"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."

"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."

"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."

Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."

Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes

"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."

" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."

"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Reader feedback

re: Full Moon and Algol - I predict that we won't be hearing anything about Maureen O'Hara, or Dennis Hopper in the news this week. . .unfortunately both have passed away
A. Dennis Hopper was actually in the news this week: his son will be an actor even though Dennis told him it wasn't a good idea... Still looking for the Maureen O'Hara item...

re: Algol - I remember 1 week ago, reading in NewsScope about the May 17th full moon and that it will be conjunct Algol. Do you suspect revenge from Bin Laden sympathizers? When I first read about the full moon and it's upcoming conj. with Algol, I circled it on my calendar and decided to keep my interactions to a minimum that day.
A. Yes, and it's already happening

re: Bin Laden's death -  Is Osama bin Laden's death on May 1 related to what you said in the April 27 NewsScope?:
"Astrologically, the U.S. is entering a phase of escalating military objectives. On May 1, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter conjoin to make a triple conjunction in the assertive sign of Aries, promoting adventurism, over-confidence and brash boldness. This rare combination is growing in power this week, and is especially significant in U.S. combat zones because it forms a close sextile to the U.S. Mars."

A: Yes, absolutely! It's a very favorable turn for the U.S. military, suggested by the triple conjunction sextile the U.S. Mars. The outer planet Eris is also there, so really it's a quadruple conjunction. They were transiting through the U.S. sixth house of military services.

re: Algol - "The Full Moon on the 17th aligns with Algol, the most evil star in the heavens." Ack! This is my son's 22nd birthday and he's about to graduate from art school and head out on his own. What does this solar return bode for him!? I'm not asking for an in-depth analysis, just a short phrase like "Fasten your seatbelts" or "It's only for one year" or "He's young--He'll get over it." Just a little something to allay fears and let me continue in the hope that he'll find a job! ;-)
response - Every chart is unique, and having the Sun conjunct Algol doesn't tell us much in itself. The Sun may be highly energized by Algol, or if natal outer planets "afflict" the Sun, then you might see some problems. As for the Solar Return on this date, the Sun forms a hard aspect to Saturn, suggesting the task of becoming an adult and entering the real world.

Maria Shriver and Algol

In traditional astrology, Algol is associated with violence, death, alcoholism, and losing one’s head, both physically and metaphorically, as in going insane. In modern times, astrologers see Algol as the carrier for the collective rage of suppressed female power. Maria Shriver announced her separation from the Governator last week, and this event helps illustrate how Algol works in practice.
Maria Shriver (November 6, 1955; 5:12 pm; Chicago, IL) was born with 26º Taurus on her Ascendant, which is the precise position of Algol. Venus, the ruler of her chart, is located in the 7th house of partners, where it’s conjunct Juno, the marriage asteroid. These two are much enhanced by a trine to Uranus, so that it seems inevitable that she would marry well, especially considering her patrician background.

However, with her Scorpio Sun and four other planets found in the 6th house of work, a significant part of her psyche found fulfillment as an award-winning broadcast journalist. She gave it all up to be Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wife. Now that they’re separated, she reportedly feels “adrift” and “lost at sea”. This week, the Full Moon is aligned with her Ascendant, and her progressed Moon is also squaring her Ascendant.
By itself, these activations of Algol aren’t enough to evoke the repressed rage depicted by this mysterious archetype. But her progressed Mars is nearing a conjunction with her Saturn in Scorpio, which in itself, brings up major anger issues. The combination of an activated Algol and progressed Mars-to-Saturn is the proverbial double whammy, and is likely quite painful. The astrologer suspects that in a few months – when her progressed Midheaven enters Aries – Ms. Shriver will energetically embrace a new beginning.

Politicians and Celebrities with Algol

This Tuesday’s Full Moon is unusual in that it will be only 0º06’ from a conjunction with Algol at 26º19’ Taurus. Algol moves slowly at the precession rate of 1º every 72 years, so that in 1939 Algol was at 27º19’ Taurus. Those with personal planets aligned with Algol get a cosmic boost with this connection. Probably 3º is the maximum allowable orb, but anything under 1º becomes mega-empowered by this so-called evil star.
Depending on the overall tenor of the natal chart, Algol can mean heightened creativity or depraved destructiveness. Algol, like other first-magnitude stars, can bring fame or infamy. Osama bin Laden’s Mars at 25º Taurus is conjunct Algol, and this week the public is finding out about his various martial activities via his personal diary and other artifacts found in his Abbottabad hideout. Bin Laden’s Mars took a bad turn, since it squares Pluto.

Nancy Pelosi also has Mars at 25º Taurus, but it’s trine Neptune, so has taken a more creative expression. Still, one can sense the intensity, or even rage behind her actions, which she channeled into becoming the Democrats' greatest fundraiser in order to champion her causes. Liberace has a Sun-Mars conjunction at 25º Taurus, which squares Saturn. He rebelled against the macho expression that this placement suggests in a creatively outrageous way.
Nicole Brown Simpson (O.J.’s victim) and cult leader Marshall Applegate have their Taurus Suns at 26º and 27º Taurus respectively, and their tragic cases illustrate the dramatic downside (“evil” is not too strong here) of Algol. Pope John Paul II had his Sun at 27º Taurus, and though he is said to be a saintly man, his main conflicts were dealing with repressed feminine rage in a variety of expressions.
Gary Cooper and Algol

Many fine actors have natal placements conjunct Algol, and from this we can see its more creative expression. Among these are Pierce Brosnan, Tine Fey, Megan Fox, David Boreanz, Maureen O’Hara, Dennis Hopper, and Debra Winger. Watch for news on these folks during the week of this special Full Moon.
Gary Cooper (May 7, 1901; 5:45 am; Helena, MT) was born with his Taurus Ascendant conjunct Algol. His daughter Maria wrote an inspiring article on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death which described his artistic goal: “to show on screen, the best that an American man can be.” Gary Cooper’s exceptionally noble character can be seen in his Sun’s conjunction with peaceful Venus, which is strengthened by solid trines to Saturn and Jupiter in reliable Capricorn.
Algol represents Medusa's evil eye, which appears to blink every three days when the dimmer star of this binary system passes in front of the brighter star.
Cooper’s Mars at 28º Leo represents the archetypal male hero. Mars squares his Ascendant, putting the accent on his mission-oriented exploits. Mars is fortified by a trine to the Moon in adventure-seeking Sagittarius as well as a conjunction with Regulus, the bright star associated with royalty. From these placements, we can see how Coop excelled in many iconic films, including his two Best Actor roles in High Noon and Sergeant York.

Cooper’s Sun-Venus forms a close quincunx to Uranus, which found expression in his unrestrained sex life with many starlets. He began his career around the same time that Clara Bow was a huge success, and the two carried on a high profile affair for several years. Then in 1933 he married the New York socialite Veronica Balfe. Before she got him to convert to Catholicism in 1958, he had secret affairs (Venus in the 12th house) with Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, and Patricia Neal (among others). One can only imagine the rage his wife must have felt during these times.
