Bernadette Brady
on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."

Demetra George
on asteroids

"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."

"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."

"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."

Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."

Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes

"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."

" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."

"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."

Michael O'Reilly
on geopolitics

"Astrology as a worldview shows us that everything is connected, that the individual is an interdependent part of the whole. "

"When Scorpio is rising, the U.S. has four planets in the eighth house, underscoring the national focus on acculating wealth and corporate influence."

"The biggest celebrities have natal planets closely connected to national planets. Their character may personify a specific planet or group of planets, so that they become a national icon or archetype."

"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"
Alice O. Howell
Reader Feedback...   "Interesting stuff about Eris.  I looked it up in the Ephemeris you provided, and transiting Eris is conjunct my natal Sun at 21 Aries 30 exactly yesterday!   My dad was taken to Emergency at the hospital yesterday, so it was rather 'discord and
strife-ish. It would be interesting to see how Eris manifests in people who have it natally conjunct their Suns....that's a lot of Aries people, since it moves so slowly.   Hard to see how it manifests in all of them, since we Aries tend to be strong anyway, but I will be paying attention now."

John Boehner, Speaker of the House

USA Today's article* on John Boehner (pronounced BAY-nur), who will be the next speaker of the House and second in line to the presidency, had this to say about his character: "Friends say his relaxed demeanor masks a fierce intelligence and iron discipline." Of course, astrologers who know Boehner's chart wouldn't have to interview any of his friends to arrive at this conclusion.

John Boehner's horoscope (November 17, 1949; Cincinnati, OH; time unknown) underscores the discipline comment, since he has a Mars-Saturn conjunction in Virgo. This combination naturally works hard and prefers a regimented schedule with everything in its place at the right time. Boehner is renowned for his early rising and exercise routine as well as his ability to understand complex legislation, since he actually reads and studies proposed bills.
Jill Clayburgh,
Empowered through Acting

Last week the New York Times lauded actress Jill Clayburgh for portraying strong independent women. Perhaps best known for her Oscar-nominated starring role in "An Unmarried Woman", Clayburgh also played the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court ("First Monday in October"), a career woman addicted to valium ("I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can"), and most recently, numerous recurring roles on TV dramas.
Pluto Brings Quantitative Easing

Last week the Fed announced a controversial plan to buy $600 billion in U.S. Treasury bonds over the next eight months. The idea is to lower interest rates, which in turn will spur spending and eventually increase the employment rate. One credible critic* says that the plan gives financial advantage to large corporations and the wealthy, while hurting small businesses and the middle class.

Astrologically, Pluto is the driving force for the plan that Fed chairman Bernanke calls "quantitative easing". Pluto in early Capricorn is heading into its first opposition to the U.S. Jupiter, which happens on January 17, 2011. Pluto opposes the U.S. Jupiter two more times in 2011 (July 9 and November 19), so that these astro-events collectively describe a year-long phase of this Pluto-Jupiter vibe.

The U.S. Jupiter is in the eighth house of capitalism where it represents America's wealthy class. The eighth house is associated with financial assets and investments, as well as the interest-earning capital that is used for lending. Pluto's opposition
The fierce intelligence may be inferred by Mercury in Scorpio square Pluto, which suggests a relentless, probing mind, the need to persuade others of his opinions, and dogmatic or obsessive thinking once an idea gets into his head. Since his Moon is in diplomatic Libra and he's also got a charming Venus-Mars trine, Boehner's intensity is concealed behind a friendly mask, as many Scorpios have learned to do.

The most important planet in his chart now and over the coming year is his Jupiter at 27º Capricorn. This placement is exactly conjunct the U.S. Pluto (the nation's ruling planet), and so when Jupiter brings him benefits, it tends to play out on the national stage. Boehner's progressed Mercury and Sun will be conjunct this Jupiter in 2011, which is when he gets the recognition (Sun) for being the Speaker of the House (Mercury).
to Jupiter signals an historic manipulation of financial markets that benefit those who can play the game.

This month transiting Jupiter turns direct while forming an exact aspect (a trioctile or 135º) to the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. This makes a double Jupiter-Pluto influence (Pluto rules Scorpio) that encourages big moves in the stock market. The day after the Fed made its announcement, the Dow Jones closed at its highest peak in two years, and the trend is likely to continue upward. However, when transiting Uranus returns to Aries and squares the U.S. Venus in May, some unexpected flaws in the theory might lead to a change of course.
Jill Clayburgh was born with her Sun in sensuous Taurus (April 30, 1944; New York, NY) where it's greatly intensified by a square to Pluto. Although her birth time is unknown, Evolutionary Astrology's approach works best here since the Sun squares the South Node in Aquarius, while Pluto is conjunct the North Node. Planets aspecting the lunar nodes describe past life tendencies that repeat in this life.

The Aquarius South Node suggests an independent thinker, perhaps a radical or someone who lives outside of consensus reality. The North Node in Leo aims to direct the individual toward expressing herself theatrically, to be heard rather than exiled. Clayburgh's Moon, Jupiter and Pluto in Leo all pulled her toward this goal. Neptune sextile the North Node opened the path to acting on Broadway and in Hollywood.
Among the nightmarish scenarios of Pluto in hard aspect to the South Node (an opposition) is living with a painful disease, like the leukemia that she eventually succumbed to last week. Pluto's positive motivation is to become empowered in order to help transform the world in a meaningful way. For the woman of the 1970s and even today, the choice is between being overwhelmed or victimized by patriarchal norms, or being a powerful person (Sun-Pluto) in her own right.
