Wounded Politicians
Was it just coincidence that three of New York's top elected officials fell victim to ethics scandals within a week? Governor Paterson was the first to falter, followed quickly by state representative Eric Massa, and then Congressman Charles Rangel, who resigned from his position as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. The Chiron-Neptune conjunction aligned with the U.S. Moon is one astrological clue, but why New York?
New York's horoscope (July 26, 1788; noon*; Poughkeepsie, NY) gives us some clues. The Sun-Uranus conjunction in Leo describes New York as being independent, creative, and proud. In political astrology, the Sun is the primary indicator for the leaders, while Neptune and its sign Pisces are generally associated with scandals. Saturn in Pisces describes New York's strong moral authority, but also the potential for hypocrisy and being undermined by temptations.
A Mercury-Pluto opposition reflects an intense media landscape and investigative intelligence operations. Pluto carries this meaning by transit,
and over the last few years has been aspecting New York's Sun-Uranus. When considering recent history, Governor Eliot Spitzer was the first to fall when he resigned in disgrace on March 12, 2008 due to an FBI sting operation. At the time, NY's progressed Sun and Saturn were conjunct in Pisces.
The New York Times broke the story on Governor Paterson's shortcomings two weeks ago as transiting Pluto was forming an exact quincunx to the NY Sun. The progressed Sun and Chiron were (and are) forming a close square, showing the "wounded politician" syndrome. All the hubbub arrived just as transiting Mars turned direct right on NY's Uranus, creating a lot of excitement about the synchronicity.
Greater Israel
Last Tuesday, Israel announced that it would build 1600 new homes in East Jerusalem, an area that the Palestinians see as their future capital. Vice President Biden, arriving to arrange peace talks, immediately condemned the project, saying it "undermined the trust required for productive negotiations." Prime Minister Netanyahu said the timing of the announcement was unfortunate, though he agreed with the construction plan.

What does it take to have a comeback at age 88? Betty White has just been selected to host Saturday Night Live on May 8, which follows her top-rated Superbowl ad for Snickers, and an overwhelming Facebook campaign. The six-time Emmy winner remains as sharp-witted as ever, having recently received the 2010 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award and having appeared in the 2009 film The Proposal.
Betty White was born with a Sun-Venus conjunction in realistic Capricorn (January 17, 1922; 6:38 pm; Oak Park, IL), a sign that often improves with age. Neptune conjunct her Leo Ascendant makes her a natural entertainer, especially since it's fortified by a sextile from Jupiter, a planet often associated with clowning. Her Neptune-Ascendant is part of a fixed Grand Cross, which provides tremendous staying power.

precisely square its Ascendant at 0º Scorpio. Mars angular like this represents an aggressive or self-assertive action, which the new settlements evoke. The settlement expansion will continue unabated as transiting Mars moves through Israel's tenth house, the house of the nation's ruling political party.
Transiting Pluto opposing Israel's Venus describes a relentless drive for a Greater Israel. Venus in Cancer and in the ninth house refers to the "Promised Land" of Genesis (a religious view of the homeland). Netanyahu's Likud Party is the torchbearer for this belief, and thus encourages settlements outside Israel's recognized borders. Israel's Venus is under pressure from transiting Saturn in Libra, underscoring the diplomatic problems.
Biden wants to start peace talks in four months, but astrologically, this looks unworkable. Israel's progressed Mars is at 29º Virgo, perfectly in line with the next Saturn-Uranus opposition in April. This indicates an extremely confrontational political atmosphere shaping up in the Middle East. The Lunar Eclipse on June 26 lands right on Israel's Venus, pointing to some kind of explosive event in or regarding Greater Israel.
White's Mercury is well placed in Aquarius, but is square Mars in Scorpio. This combination reveals a sharp, caustic tongue, which is only softened by Mercury's aspects to Jupiter and Neptune. When she was starring in the Golden Girls, she played a ditzy flake that astrologers associate with the clueless Neptune. In The Mary Tyler Moore Show, she played a more sexually predatory role, as reflected by her angular Mars in Scorpio.
Sudden fame is often accompanied by Jupiter-Uranus combinations. Last week, when the SNL gig was announced, transiting Jupiter was conjunct her progressed Uranus. Over the next three years, she has a progressed Jupiter-Uranus connection, ensuring her of several more years of
star power. Her progressed Ascendant will be conjunct natal Ceres when she takes the stage on SNL's Mother's Day episode, making her the reigning archetypal American mother.
