"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Pluto Initiates Financial Reform

A NewsScope reader wonders about the disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street. "It's as if in the stock market everything is
As transiting Pluto heads into its first opposition to the U.S. Jupiter, financial regulation is moving to the center stage following the passage of the health care bill. The nature of transiting Pluto in the U.S. second house is to take us to the edge of economic catastrophe unless corrective reforms are made to resuscitate trust in the system – the basic ingredient needed to restore jobs and consumer confidence.
Jupiter in the eighth house is naturally associated with financial institutions that are too large. Last week, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd unveiled a financial reform bill aimed at addressing some of the fundamental problems in the American capitalist system. This dramatic restructuring is in accord with Pluto's nature, especially as it opposes Venus and Jupiter in the eighth house of credit and financial investments.

Pluto's passage through Sagittarius corresponded to easy credit and a speculative bubble. Now that Pluto is in Capricorn, banks have tightened up, credit is difficult to attain, and consumers are more focused on saving. In the larger sense, Pluto in Capricorn is about empowering government agencies to oversee society's evolution. Yet the outer planets are moving into a T-square over the next two years – all aligned with the U.S. Venus-Jupiter. We can expect this to become a hotly contested issue.
rosy, while in real life most people have problems making their ends meet!" Many politicians now recognize the need to rein in greedy financiers who game the capitalist system for their own benefit by hiding within banks "too big to fail".
Pope Benedict Addresses an Explosive Issue

Last week, Pope Benedict ordered an investigation into Ireland's Catholic Church. In a letter that was broadcast across Europe, the Pope rebuked Irish bishops for grave errors of judgment, and gave guidelines on preventing and punishing sexual abuse of children by priests. In recent months, a wave of sex scandals has rocked the Catholic Church in Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Pope Benedict's horoscope (April 16, 1927; 4:15 am; Marktl, Germany) gives us some insights into where this drama is heading. First, his natal Jupiter conjunct his Pisces Ascendant gives him the image of being a pious, deeply religious
man. His career path follows this image with Saturn in the ninth house of religion, and Sagittarius at the Midheaven.

The Pope's Moon is in polite Libra, so he naturally prefers not to discuss such unpleasant issues as rampant pedophilia and homosexuality among Europe's Catholic priests. Yet with his Moon squaring Pluto, inevitably he must deal with the deeper implications. Last week, transiting Uranus was squaring his Midheaven when a sex-abuse task force in Germany hinted that the Pope ignored or mismanaged hundreds of sex abuse cases in his former diocese.

Uranus rules the Pope's twelfth house of hidden affairs and the past. We can expect that under his pending Uranus Return this coming June, his past will
come back to haunt him. With his natal Pluto located on the fifth house cusp of children, pedophilia is the main issue. Considering that he's experiencing a progressed Sun-Pluto conjunction, his tenure as Pope may not last the year.
Sandra Bullock Blindsided

The world's attention has been keenly focused on Sandra Bullock since she won the Oscar for Best Actress. But last Wednesday she suddenly canceled her planned appearance for the London premiere of The Blind Side, citing "unforeseen personal reasons". The next day, husband Jesse James issued a public apology for being unfaithful, and by Friday, Bullock had moved out of their Huntington Beach home.

Sandra Bullock was born a proud, bright Leo (July 26, 1964; 3:15 am*; Arlington, VA), with a charismatic, romantic Venus-Mars conjunction right on her Gemini Ascendant. Leos love to be in love, and with the love planets in charming, clever Gemini, Ms. Bullock was naturally drawn to romantic comedies. These Gemini
placements also reflect that her best movies include transportation disaster flicks Speed and Crash.

Curiously, she personally has been involved in several potentially fatal car and airplane accidents. The astrological signature for these is Mars in Gemini conjunct her North Node. The North Node also forms a hard aspect to Neptune, suggesting the mysterious, fateful nature of these events. The North Node in her first house has protected her personally, but the troublesome South Node is in her 7th house of partners.

Mars is also the natural ruler of the man in her life, and as the infidelity story broke, the transiting Sun-Uranus conjunction (sudden revelations and disruptions) was squaring her Mars. Jesse James had been fooling around with a tattooed stripper when transiting Pluto was passing over Bullock's South Node. Over the coming year, Bullock's progressed Sun will be opposing her Chiron, suggesting a phase of deep emotional pain. But then, her progressed Venus conjoins her Sun, likely bringing a new romantic adventure.
