on progressions
"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"
"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."
"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."
Demetra George
on asteroids
"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."
"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."
"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."
Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos
Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."
"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."
"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."
Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes
"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."
" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."
"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."
Michael O'Reilly
on geopolitics
"Astrology as a worldview shows us that everything is connected, that the individual is an interdependent part of the whole. "
"When Scorpio is rising, the U.S. has four planets in the eighth house, underscoring the national focus on acculating wealth and corporate influence."
"The biggest celebrities have natal planets closely connected to national planets. Their character may personify a specific planet or group of planets, so that they become a national icon or archetype."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"
Reader Feedback... "Thanks for the fantastic job you do on Newscope...I especially enjoyed the coverage of Sedna and the inclusion of the music.Your work is accesible yet always introduces the lyrical and mythic...Thanks for a great weekly offering, Michael. May it keep flowing!"
" I think Sarah Palin is a Gemini rising. I've rectified her chart to about 11am, give or take. It puts Capricorn on the 9th, which supports her religious affiliation. And of course it puts her Sun in the 10th, which thrusts her into the public eye."

Christine O'Donnell's Pallas-Pluto
Delaware's GOP senate candidate Christine O'Donnell is making national news because of her controversial statements which were aired last week by political commentator Bill Maher. "I dabbled in witchcraft," said O'Donnell in a 1999 video. "One of my first dates was with a witch, and I didn't know it. We went to a movie and then had a midnight picnic on a satanic altar."
O'Donnell's horoscope (August 27, 1969; Moorestown, NJ; time unknown) features an Earth
Grand Trine, which connects her Virgo Sun with Saturn in Taurus and Juno in Capricorn. These interconnected placements describe a mature individual who feels a sense of responsibility, one with strong moral values. Since Saturn opposes the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, she feels compelled to re-shape America's values.
O'Donnell has the political asteroid Pallas exactly square Pluto, which in turn is conjunct her South Node. This is the mark of the political extremist or passionate reformer. Evolutionary astrologer Steven Forrest has this to say about this Pluto-South Node connection: "You were touched by one of two realities; either catastrophe or flat-out evil. Paranoia about schemers or looming catastrophes can be projected onto innocent fabric, as if demons were afoot."
Forrest goes on to discuss Pluto here in terms of repressed emotions - fear, rage, shame, and grief - all of which clearly motivate her conservative Tea Party agenda. At the moment, transiting Jupiter and Uranus are trine her Venus, bringing her plenty of infamy. Although she's behind in the polls, transiting Pluto trine her Sun and a progressed Sun-Jupiter conjunction are very favorable indicators. Even if she loses in November, she will likely remain a national presence, perhaps as a Fox commentator.
Top Five Astro-Events for October
1. Venus turns retrograde on the 7th, the same day as the New Moon in Libra. This double whammy presents spontaneous attractions and separations from the 1st through 13th since Venus is also aspecting Uranus. Expect temporary problems for couples in committed relationships, possibly involving romantic triangles and sexual incompatibilities, though money may also be a major issue.
2. Pluto opposes the U.S. Venus on the 9th for the fifth and final time since February 2009. This 18-month interval corresponds to the time the Obama administration has empowered government to fix the collapsed economy. The intense financial drama is only the beginning of a much larger role of government in steering our collective, as Pluto remains in Capricorn until 2024.
3. Ceres enters Capricorn on the 9th and then conjoins Pluto on the 19th, a combination that suggests the growing caretaker role of governments and corporations. Ceres here may also represent patronage, bribery, corruption or helping associates through institutional support. Ceres-Pluto may point to a major disaster that requires government resources to help victims. Watch for a massive recall in the food industry.
4. The U.S. progressed Sun trines natal Jupiter on the 30th, the culmination of a growing influence over the past year. This connection is very favorable for corporate America and fosters mergers and acquisitions, while keeping the economic outlook in a positive vein. In popular culture, watch for endless films and documentaries about the economy and the super-rich.
5. The U.S. progressed Venus will be conjunct Chiron on November 3, but is a strong influence throughout October. This dynamic unfolds in the sixth house of jobs and reflects the chronic unemployment figures and the dwindling income of the middle class. The contrast between this aspect and #4 above points to the growing divide between the haves and have-nots – the worst it's been since the 1920s.
Venus Turns on
Demi Moore's Neptune
Last Friday Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in good spirits, which seemed to dismay the paparazzi. Rumors of his alleged one-night stand have been pasted across the front pages of Star magazine with an "exclusive story" and incriminating text messages. Demi, the poster child for the cougar movement, defied the rumors when she and Ashton made several public appearances together.
Demi Moore was born with a magnetic Sun-Venus conjunction in Scorpio (November 11, 1962; 2:16 pm; Roswell, NM), a lucky pairing that offers grace, beauty and charm. This Sun-Venus is much enhanced by the conjunction with Neptune, adding idealistic romanticism and seductive eroticism – all of which is greedily captured by the camera. The Sun-Venus-Neptune trio squares Mars, a potential signature for misguided trust and/or deception within marriage.
Ashton Kutcher (February 7, 1978; Cedar Rapids, IA; time unknown) was also born with a Sun-Venus conjunction, but placed in the networking sign of Aquarius. His Venus opposes Saturn, a challenging aspect for lovers, but one that is often worked out by having a significant age difference between partners. His alleged tryst with a 21-year-old fits this celestial equation, as does his marriage with the elder Demi.
Ashton's Juno is in the steadfast sign of Capricorn, while Demi's Juno is in duty-conscious Virgo. Both indicate a firm belief in the institution of marriage. However, Demi's progressed Moon and Midheaven are activating her natal Mars-Neptune square, suggesting a major turning point in her alliance with Ashton. On October 7, Venus turns retrograde right on her Neptune, the ruler of her chart, when she will likely change her tune and become more reclusive.
