Reader Feedback  As for me, a mostly African American, this homeland of mine has always felt strongly  like a Scorpio rising overlay to me,  given that most of my ancestors came to this country in the hulls of ships and lived the Slave life for hundreds of years with no freedoms. Thereafter, they endured a 100 years of lynching followed by a period of Jim Crow and segregation.

Bernadette Brady
on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."

Demetra George
on asteroids

"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."

"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."

"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."

Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."

Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes

"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."

" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."

"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."

Celeste Teal
on prediction

"The progressed aspects show the 'plot' of a story and lay the foundation for the types of events that will be triggered by the transits."

"It is the progressions that set the stage for potential events, showing detailed conditions and circumstances for a particular time frame accoring to the aspects formed between progressed and natal planets or between two progressed planets."

"At times of major events, there are frequently two or more exact aspects from outer transiting planets to natal or progressed planets."

Michael O'Reilly
on geopolitics

"Astrology as a worldview shows us that everything is connected, that the individual is an interdependent part of the whole. "

"When Scorpio is rising, the U.S. has four planets in the eighth house, underscoring the national focus on acculating wealth and corporate influence."

"The biggest celebrities have natal planets closely connected to national planets. Their character may personify a specific planet or group of planets, so that they become a national icon or archetype."

The Vatican's Dissonant Equation

Last Thursday the Vatican revised its rules on sex abuse cases, and in an astonishing addendum, said that any priest caught ordaining women will be designated as having committed "a grave crime". Many Catholic women* were deeply upset by this decree, and noted that priests who abuse children are mildly disciplined, while women ordained as priests are excommunicated, i.e., spiritually condemned.
The Vatican (June 7, 1929; 11:00 am; Rome, Italy) was established when Jupiter in the fixed sign of Taurus was right on the Midheaven. This placement accounts for the rigid, traditional views of the Catholic hierarchy, especially since it's stiffened by a quincunx to Saturn in moralistic Sagittarius. The progressed Moon is currently right on the Vatican's Midheaven.

Mars in the reclusive 12th house is squared by two feminine archetypes, Juno in Scorpio and Ceres in Taurus. Mars in the 12th house tends to be fearful, often hiding its actions or behaviors from the light of day. The tight squares to these feminine archetypes indicate not only a fear of sex and women in general, but perhaps also a fear of women's revenge, which is Juno's specialty.
The ongoing outer planet dynamic reflects the tensions within the Catholic Church: Saturn has a natural affinity with Pluto in Capricorn, and pushes for ever tighter controls as the square between the two becomes exact. Jupiter and Uranus in Aries urge for far-reaching reforms that will empower half of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. These developments seem to be signalling that we are leaving behind the self-sacrificing Age of Pisces and entering the Age of Aquarius, where men and women co-create our collective reality.

Gemini Rising versus Scorpio Rising

To the many readers who wanted to see the debate transcript about whether the most accurate U.S. horoscope has Gemini or Scorpio Rising, well, it's totally inconclusive. It's a fruitless exercise, and only shows how different people viewing the same information and using the same astrological techniques can arrive at two completely different assessments.

Still, perhaps I can offer the flavor of the debate. We looked at some of the most striking historical events and compared the outer planet transits and secondary progressions, emphasizing the angles and the Moon, since they show the most difference between the two charts. These included the current recession and oil spill, Lincoln's and JFK's assassinations, the 9/11 event, the 1929 stock market crash, and Pearl Harbor.

My most charitable comment went something like this: "I do see some remarkable connections with the Gemini Rising chart. I can't account for its historic validity, but perhaps Luke Broughton was right in placing Uranus on the Ascendant and using that chart. But in such a case, it would show the most Uranian events, which are generally the events you choose from history to demonstrate the chart's value."

From a purely subjective view, in the Scorpio Rising chart with its many planets in the 8th house, I see a compulsive interest in sex and violence, but more fundamentally, a nation built on capitalism and leveraged assets. The Gemini Rising advocate sees a nation devoted to freedom of speech, the fight for independence, and an innovative populace. I think these traits are all covered by the Moon in Aquarius (plus Uranus quincunx the Scorpio Ascendant), but don't see where in the Gemini Rising chart corporate dominance shows up. And so it goes...
Mel Gibson's
Madonna-Whore Complex

The tabloids are having a field day speculating on Mel Gibson's doomed career after his Russian ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, released incriminating tapes of their phone conversations. Gibson was caught venting extreme anger and threats of violence. New York Times columnist David Brooks, engaging in some uncharacteristic psycho-babble, determined that Gibson is a narcissist and was being hypersensitive about perceived threats to his greatness.
Astrologically, it's a clear case of a Mars gone out of control. Gibson (January 3, 1956; 4:45 pm; Peekskill, NY) was born with a Mars-Saturn conjunction in intense Scorpio. Mars is said to be well-placed in the warrior sign of Scorpio, while Saturn provides constant resistance. The combination can lead to problems with aggression, notably, pent up anger that explodes in volcanic rage. This is doubly true since his Mars-Saturn conjunction squares a Jupiter-Pluto conjunction, which adds a religious, self-righteous fervor.

Between the many expletives, his main complaint to Oksana was that she had no soul. In general, a man's anima (his inner feminine) is signifed by the feminine planets. In Gibson's case, a Venus-Ceres conjunction forms a trioctile (135º hard aspect)
with his Moon, which leads to conflict about their roles in his life. This split naturally follows his traditional Catholic view that women tend to be nurturing and caretaking "madonnas", or sexually wild and uncontrollable "whores".

Oksana had Gibson's child on October 30, 2009 when transiting Saturn was conjunct his Moon in Libra, the ruler of his chart. Over this coming week, we can only imagine his frustration as transiting Mars and Saturn return to his Moon, and at the same time, transiting Uranus is opposing his Moon. This rage reflects an inability to control his partner, an inability to fashion her according to his inner image of a madonna.

"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"
