Bernadette Brady
on progressions
"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"
"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."
"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."
Demetra George
on asteroids
"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."
"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."
"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."
Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos
Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."
"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."
"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."
Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes
"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."
" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."
"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."
Michael O'Reilly
on geopolitics
"Astrology as a worldview shows us that everything is connected, that the individual is an interdependent part of the whole. "
"When Scorpio is rising, the U.S. has four planets in the eighth house, underscoring the national focus on acculating wealth and corporate influence."
"The biggest celebrities have natal planets closely connected to national planets. Their character may personify a specific planet or group of planets, so that they become a national icon or archetype."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"
Reader Feedback... "As to your China article I have some info for you. I am a long time researcher (30+ years) of the Edgar Cayce readings, and Mr. Cayce stated in several of his readings that China will eventually become the premier Christian country and power in the world. Anyway, thanks again for another great article in your NewsScope column."

Hou Yifan, Chess Prodigy
The Women's World Chess Championship was held last month in Turkey, and to the surprise of most everyone, Hou Yifan from China won the competition, becoming the youngest women's world chess champion in history. As New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof writes, the teen prodigy is a result of China's heavy investment in education and human capital, especially in young women.
Hou Yifan was born with a Sun-Saturn conjunction in Pisces (February 27, 1994; Xinghua, Taizhou, China; time unknown), giving her plenty of imagination and ambition. This combination is enhanced by a trine to Jupiter, so that she has much encouragement for her passion for chess. Her Mercury, describing the way she processes information, is exalted in Aquarius, given a warrior's strength and courage by the conjunction with Mars, and much intensified by the square to Pluto.
Hou Yifan's favorite chess player is Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943; 2:39 pm; Chicago, IL), who also has a Pisces Sun trine Jupiter to bring him success. Fischer's Mercury is likewise in Aquarius, and he has a similar Mars-Pluto aspect (an opposition) that fostered a relentless drive to win. Fischer's Taurus Moon squaring his Mars-Pluto polarity eventually drove him toward paranoia and bizarre behavior.
Fortunately for Hou Yifan, her Virgo Moon favorably trines a Uranus-Neptune conjunction, which indicates a calmer, even serene emotional life. She won the Women's World Championship on December 25, 2010 as the transiting Jupiter-Uranus conjunction landed on her progressed Sun in Pisces. One can anticipate much success over the next three years as her progressed Sun goes on to trine her Pluto.

Tunisia's Social Network
Over the weekend, effective control of Tunisia's government changed hands for the second time in 24 hours following former President Zine el-Abine Ben Ali's flight from the country. The popular uprising began a month ago, when a desperately poor street vendor set fire to himself after police confiscated the vegetables he was selling without a permit. The situation in Tunisia remains fluid and chaotic.
Tunisia's horoscope* (June 15, 1956; 5:00 pm; Tunis, Tunisia) features the Gemini Sun sextile a Jupiter-Pluto conjunction near the Midheaven. This combination can readily be equated with the leadership's close ties to a social elite. Since Jupiter-Pluto squares Saturn, a rigid social structure has been in place since independence. The Sun squares the Virgo Moon, suggesting the underlying tension between Tunisia's ruling class and the common people.
The self-immolation incident took place on December 17 just after transiting Uranus had turned direct at 26º Pisces while opposite Tunisia's Moon (orb: 0º02'). Political astrologers generally associate challenging Uranus transits to the Moon as revolutionary events. However, in today's emerging Age of Aquarius, networking technologies like Facebook and Twitter can turn an isolated rural incident into a national cause.
Connecting the regional dots, Pakistan's President Musharraf was forced to resign on August 18, 2008 following two years of protests – all generated by social networking tools. This unfolded as Pakistan's progressed Sun was squaring its natal Moon, once again providing celestial empowerment to the people. Similarly in Iran, social networking led to mass protests against Ahmadinejad's 2009 election. However, Iran's Moon wasn't activated, and the protests were put down. Still, the message is clear: in the Age of Aquarius, the people have the power.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette
A reader asks for some astrological insights into the troublesome, conflicted relationship between Courteney Cox and David Arquette. Three months ago, just after they announced their separation, David confessed on the Howard Stern show that Courteney was tired of being his mother. He said "I've been drinking a lot because I'm heartbroken." Two weeks ago, David checked himself into rehab after months of erratic behavior.
David Arquette was born with an attractive, fun-loving Sun-Venus conjunction in Virgo (September 8, 1971; Winchester, VA; time unknown). As the ruler of Virgo, Mercury becomes an important planet in his chart. Mercury, associated with mental attitude, is found in Leo where it's conjunct the first magnitude star Regulus, and under manic-depressive pressure by being at the center of a T-square involving Jupiter, Neptune and Saturn.
Courteney Cox was also born with a Sun-Venus conjunction (June 15, 1964; Birmingham, AL; time unknown) and her Gemini Sun is also ruled by Mercury. In Courtney's case, Mercury is similarly at the center of a T-square since it squares her Moon-Uranus-Pluto triple conjunction in Virgo and Saturn in Pisces. The plus side of these dynamic Mercury aspects makes for witty rapport and punch lines, but the downside is a preoccupation with mental stability.
Adding psychological complexity to their interactions is that her Pluto squares his Sun-Venus, while his Pluto squares her Sun-Venus. This sexually magnetic mutual attraction can quickly turn into fear of betrayal, especially if one partner has more clout or personal power than the other. Cougar Town star Courteney Cox is doing exceptionally well, but has said she's having trouble dealing with fame without David. Naturally, he doesn't want to be second fiddle.
