Bernadette Brady
on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."

Demetra George
on asteroids

"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."

"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."

"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."

Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."

Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes

"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."

" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."

"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Reader feedback

re: Full Moon and Algol - I predict that we won't be hearing anything about Maureen O'Hara, or Dennis Hopper in the news this week. . .unfortunately both have passed away
A. Dennis Hopper was actually in the news this week: his son will be an actor even though Dennis told him it wasn't a good idea... Still looking for the Maureen O'Hara item...

re: Algol - I remember 1 week ago, reading in NewsScope about the May 17th full moon and that it will be conjunct Algol. Do you suspect revenge from Bin Laden sympathizers? When I first read about the full moon and it's upcoming conj. with Algol, I circled it on my calendar and decided to keep my interactions to a minimum that day.
A. Yes, and it's already happening

re: Bin Laden's death -  Is Osama bin Laden's death on May 1 related to what you said in the April 27 NewsScope?:
"Astrologically, the U.S. is entering a phase of escalating military objectives. On May 1, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter conjoin to make a triple conjunction in the assertive sign of Aries, promoting adventurism, over-confidence and brash boldness. This rare combination is growing in power this week, and is especially significant in U.S. combat zones because it forms a close sextile to the U.S. Mars."

A: Yes, absolutely! It's a very favorable turn for the U.S. military, suggested by the triple conjunction sextile the U.S. Mars. The outer planet Eris is also there, so really it's a quadruple conjunction. They were transiting through the U.S. sixth house of military services.

re: Algol - "The Full Moon on the 17th aligns with Algol, the most evil star in the heavens." Ack! This is my son's 22nd birthday and he's about to graduate from art school and head out on his own. What does this solar return bode for him!? I'm not asking for an in-depth analysis, just a short phrase like "Fasten your seatbelts" or "It's only for one year" or "He's young--He'll get over it." Just a little something to allay fears and let me continue in the hope that he'll find a job! ;-)
response - Every chart is unique, and having the Sun conjunct Algol doesn't tell us much in itself. The Sun may be highly energized by Algol, or if natal outer planets "afflict" the Sun, then you might see some problems. As for the Solar Return on this date, the Sun forms a hard aspect to Saturn, suggesting the task of becoming an adult and entering the real world.

Was Strauss-Kahn Set Up?

A little over a week ago, Dominique Strauss-Kahn was the front-runner in France’s 2012 presidential election. On May 14 he was accused of sexually assaulting a maid at a luxurious New York hotel. He resigned his post as head of the IMF to defend himself against the charges. A full 57% of the French population believes he was set up. Did he do it?

DSK was born with his Taurus Sun conjunct the love planets Venus and Mars (April 25, 1949; 11:10 am*; Neuilly-sur-Seine, FR). His natal Mars, associated with aggression and sexual style, is located in impulsive Aries where it’s amped up by a sextile to Uranus and a square to Jupiter. The Aries Moon likewise tends to be very direct, spontaneous, and impetuous.
On the day in question, transiting Uranus was conjunct DSK’s Moon and transiting Jupiter conjunct his Mars – both indicators of brash or reckless actions. Also, transiting Mars was conjunct his Sun, creating a surge of sexual energy and desire. Of course these transits may be channeled into more constructive outlets, but the fact that they were in effect during the alleged crime indicates he was in an unusually forceful, insistent mode.

DSK’s fall from power can be seen astrologically by transiting Pluto’s square to his Midheaven. Transiting Uranus will conjoin his Midheaven while Pluto squares it in one year, completing the total collapse of a famous man’s career. In the nearer term, transiting Pluto is opposing his progressed New Moon in the 12th house of “self-undoing”.  Pluto turns direct on September 15 while exactly opposite his progressed Sun, which likely indicates a key end point to this international scandal.
* DSK's birth data is according to the French website astrotheme, which doesn’t reveal the source of timed births.
France’s Horoscope

France’s national horoscope is set for the moment the State Seal was affixed to the new constitution at 6:30 pm (October 6, 1958; Paris). With the Sun in Libra, Venus becomes an important natal planet. She is very well placed in her own sign Libra and tremendously enhanced by a trine to Mars and a conjunction with Ceres. Venus’s prominence explains France’s support of the arts and fashion as well as its international influence in financial affairs.
Currently, transiting Uranus is opposing France’s Venus, which corresponds to the Strauss-Kahn sex scandal. Revolutionary Uranus activating France’s Venus can also be seen at the Cannes Film Festival, which concluded over the weekend. A top-rated film The Source features an Arab Spring storyline where the women in a Moroccan village go on a love strike to force the men to help carry water from the distant well.

President Nicolas Sarkozy (January 28, 1955; 10:00 pm; Paris) achieved a happy blend of sex and politics when he married model and singer Carla Bruni on February 2, 2008. At the time, a Venus-Jupiter conjunction landed on France’s Midheaven, while the progressed Sun opposed Mars and sextiled Venus. The current loss of a major presidential candidate can be seen in transiting Saturn’s conjunction with France’s Sun.
Presidents Obama and Sarkozy will meet this week during the G-8 summit being held at Deauville, France. France has been unusually militant in 2011 during the Arab uprisings due to Uranus’s activation of France’s natal Mars as well as Sarkozy’s own Moon-Mars conjunction in Aries. Next year, the first of seven Uranus-Pluto squares will align with France’s Midheaven and Sarkozy’s Mars, indicating he’s a willing military partner with the U.S. in managing the Arab Spring.
Roger Federer at the French Open
A reader asks, “What’s going on with Roger Federer?” Many die-hard tennis fans hope he can overcome whatever has been ailing him to make a comeback at the French Open, which began over the weekend. Federer was ranked #1 in the world for a record 237 weeks, but he’s recently slipped to #3, and many commentators feel he’s lost a step.
Roger Federer was born with his Sun in flamboyant Leo (August 8, 1981; 8:40 am; Basel, Switzerland). The Sun’s sextile to Pluto and trine to Neptune enhance the Leo’s natural showmanship and leadership qualities. Mars is closely sextile the Virgo Ascendant, which gives Federer athleticism, even if Mars is relatively poorly placed in emotional Cancer.

Federer overcame emotional outbursts with the help of a wise coach when he was young, which is shown by the Mars-Saturn square. Hard aspects between Mars and Saturn are a restraining, intensely competitive influence, but can also lead to immense frustration without mental discipline. Federer has been under the influence of his Saturn Return over the last two years, which corresponds to his recent decline.

Saturn represents the process of aging and all the mental hang-ups that can
come with being unable to live up to the past. The psychological influence is shown by transiting Pluto’s square to his Saturn, and his progressed Mercury conjunct natal Saturn. Oddly enough, it was one Saturn cycle ago that the 29-year-old Jimmy Connors** won the French Open, and he was under the same pressure that Federer now feels. Connors was also experiencing a progressed Mercury conjunct Saturn, telling us that tennis is as much a mental game as physical.
