Bernadette Brady
on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."

Demetra George
on asteroids

"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."

"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."

"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."

Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."

Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes

"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."

" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."

"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Reader feedback

re: Federer - I just looked at Federer natal chart and couldn't believe that someone with this kind of fame and success is born with the Sun in house XII and doesn't even have one planet in house X!

A. Well, he is a Leo, and it's hard to keep a strong Leo out of the limelight. Notice that he has a formidable Jupitrer-Saturn in the 2nd house of money closely trine the MC. This helps build his career and promises financial security (wealth even) in the process.

re: story idea - Good work as usual. Topic suggestion: Lance Armstrong.

re: Algol - Last Sunday, psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa from the London School of Economics (LSE) wrote a blog entitled "Why Black Women Are Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women.”  Did this have anything to do with Algol?  The subject is mean-spirited and quite frankly, I can’t believe that someone would actually research it.

A. Yes, you're seeing the nastiness of Algol and feeling first hand the rage of repressed feminine power.

re: Bin Laden's death -  Is Osama bin Laden's death on May 1 related to what you said in the April 27 NewsScope?:
"Astrologically, the U.S. is entering a phase of escalating military objectives. On May 1, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter conjoin to make a triple conjunction in the assertive sign of Aries, promoting adventurism, over-confidence and brash boldness. This rare combination is growing in power this week, and is especially significant in U.S. combat zones because it forms a close sextile to the U.S. Mars."

A: Yes, absolutely! It's a very favorable turn for the U.S. military, suggested by the triple conjunction sextile the U.S. Mars. The outer planet Eris is also there, so really it's a quadruple conjunction. They were transiting through the U.S. sixth house of military services.

re: Algol - "The Full Moon on the 17th aligns with Algol, the most evil star in the heavens." Ack! This is my son's 22nd birthday and he's about to graduate from art school and head out on his own. What does this solar return bode for him!? I'm not asking for an in-depth analysis, just a short phrase like "Fasten your seatbelts" or "It's only for one year" or "He's young--He'll get over it." Just a little something to allay fears and let me continue in the hope that he'll find a job! ;-)
response - Every chart is unique, and having the Sun conjunct Algol doesn't tell us much in itself. The Sun may be highly energized by Algol, or if natal outer planets "afflict" the Sun, then you might see some problems. As for the Solar Return on this date, the Sun forms a hard aspect to Saturn, suggesting the task of becoming an adult and entering the real world.

Mitt Romney, the Wounded Candidate

With time running short to choose a candidate, Mitt Romney has emerged as the Republicans’ most likely standard bearer. He came in second to John McCain in the 2008 race, and so earns the title “heir apparent”. However, he barely leads in the polls, and the GOP may yet “go rogue” and pick an insurgent Tea Party favorite.

Astrologically speaking, in order to capture the attention of a national audience, a candidate must have close connections to the U.S. horoscope. Mitt Romney (March 12, 1947; 9:51 am; Detroit, MI) has no natal connections to the U.S. Moon at 25º Aquarius - his Moon-Jupiter conjunction at 27º Scorpio is too far away to make a difference in a national election.
Romney does have Chiron at 8º Scorpio (conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant), which is a plus if he can handle it right. Recall that Obama, with Neptune at 8º Scorpio, built his campaign on Neptune’s symbolism, i.e., “The Audacity of Hope” and reclaiming the American dream. We may see Romney use Chiron’s symbolism, as in fixing the economy and re-working the health care program. However, Chiron may also represent a deeply flawed candidate, and this is already apparent to many Republicans.

Romney’s progressed chart tells us why he’s rising to the top now. His progressed Vesta, now at 25º Taurus, squares the U.S. Moon (a good thing). Vesta in this position represents financial conservatism and campaign contributions. Romney leads the pack in this regard. Next year, his progressed Sun and Mercury will be at 25º Taurus as well, allowing him a window of opportunity to connect with voters across the country.
Top Five Astro-Events for June

1. Pallas turns retrograde on June 1st while opposing the U.S. Midheaven, a sign that the opposition party, the GOP, is in disarray. Political strategists and presidential hopefuls are unsure, ill-informed, and inept. Pallas remains retrograde through September 24th, indicating that the debt ceiling may not be raised by August 2nd when the U.S. will default and potentially lead to a world financial crisis.

2. Jupiter enters Taurus on June 4th, bringing abundance and prosperity to those who have prepared the ground. From the 4th through 9th, Jupiter favorably aspecting Neptune creates opportunity to have wishes fulfilled, and to find a balance between material security and spiritual awareness. For the next year, Jupiter promises blessings from ancestral roots, time-honored traditions, and that which grows slowly over time.

3. Saturn turns direct on June 12th in Libra, marking a consolidation phase in relationships. In U.S. affairs, Saturn here represents a turning point in strategic geopolitical alliances. During the entire month of June, Saturn is also trioctile the U.S. Moon, which weighs heavily on public confidence. Expect poor economic news, especially in the real estate market.
4. The Lunar Eclipse on June 15th squares Ceres in Pisces and Juno in Virgo, creating a Mutable Grand Cross. This configuration represents an existential crisis for some, while others may feel stagnant, restless, or scattered. Clarity comes from being flexible, engaging, and finding the higher truth or organizing principle to streams of information. Be careful of accidents, especially while traveling.

5. The Uranus-Pluto square is activated by Mercury from June 17th to 19th, leading to surprising, ingenious, and perhaps dangerous ideas. Expect radical and extremist statements from politicians, and recognition that desperate times call for desperate measures. Then, when Mercury squares Saturn on the 21st, expect the consequences of hasty words and hare-brained ideas to emerge. Watch for events foreshadowing what will happen in 2012.
Casey Anthony, Murderer?

For NewsScope’s Forensic Astrology Dept., a reader asks who killed Caylee Anthony: “The television news buildup has gone on for a couple of years, and now they’re broadcasting the trial live. My gut says Casey Anthony killed her little girl. What do the stars say?”

Casey Anthony was born with her Sun and Mercury in the misty sign of Pisces (March 19, 1986; Warren, OH; time unknown), where they square an impulsive Mars-Uranus conjunction in restless, freedom-loving Sagittarius. Mercury retrograde in the sign of its fall is poorly placed, and records show that she frequently invented fantasies to account for her actions. Most importantly, she describes a non-existent nanny who took care of Caylee when the toddler was already dead.
Casey’s Pluto conjunct her South Node in Scorpio is a powerful placement, giving her life and death choices. Caylee (August 9, 2005) has Mars in Taurus, exactly opposite her mother’s Pluto, potentially a highly contentious or even lethal combination between mother and daughter. On the day when Caylee probably was killed – June 16, 2008 – transiting Pluto was squaring Casey’s Sun, leading to the fateful murder.

Transiting Pluto represents a long-term dilemma. For Casey, this meant trying to balance her responsibilities for Caylee while she led a busy sex life. Also at this time, transiting Uranus was squaring natal Uranus, signifying a strong need for independence. She was having too much fun to be a mother. On June 16, 2008, the transiting Sun opposed her Mars, while transiting Mars was trine her Uranus, a highly action-oriented combination. These faster moving planets triggered the heavier Pluto and Uranus transits, undoubtedly leading to murder.
