Bernadette Brady
on progressions

"The progression will seem to manifest first as a feeling or need and then as an action"

"Progressions are the way the cosmos manifests through us, as compared to a transit, which manifests on us."

"Progressions are a richer source of information than transits. They tap into the realm of the inner, personal world, showing both day-to-day motivations as well as unshakable life statements or desires."

Demetra George
on asteroids

"Astrologers need the asteroids because the tradi-tional planets simply do not and cannot fully explain the issues which are emerging - simply because they are new."

"Before the use of asteroids, the only significators of the feminine in the traditional chart interpretation were the Moon and Venus. The socially acceptable roles for women were the Moon as mother and Venus as mate."

"Ceres, Pallas, June and Vesta represent the new voices of the dormant feminine, recently activated and now demanding power, recognition, justice, and equality in our society."

Richard Tarnas
on the cosmos

Astrology is not concretely predictive, but archetypally predictive."

"The modern dismissal of astrology reflects the virtually universal conviction that the cosmos is disenchanted."

"The universe is a fundamentally and irreducibly interconnected whole, informed by creative intelligence and pervaded by patterns of meaning and order that extend through every level, and that are expressed through a constant correspondence between astronomical events and human events."

Nicholas Campion
on national horoscopes

"Experiment with the charts. Make predictions. And yes, prediction remains a perfectly valid exercise: one successful prediction reveals more about the nature of the universe than a hundred retrospective studies."

" Just as the individual is contained within the collective, so natal astrology can be seen as contained within mundane astrology."

"The modern nation state is largely a creation of the French revolution and is becoming increasingly irrelevant as capitalism becomes global."
"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Reader feedback

re: Federer - I just looked at Federer natal chart and couldn't believe that someone with this kind of fame and success is born with the Sun in house XII and doesn't even have one planet in house X!

A. Well, he is a Leo, and it's hard to keep a strong Leo out of the limelight. Notice that he has a formidable Jupitrer-Saturn in the 2nd house of money closely trine the MC. This helps build his career and promises financial security (wealth even) in the process.

re: story idea - Good work as usual. Topic suggestion: Lance Armstrong.

re: Algol - Last Sunday, psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa from the London School of Economics (LSE) wrote a blog entitled "Why Black Women Are Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women.”  Did this have anything to do with Algol?  The subject is mean-spirited and quite frankly, I can’t believe that someone would actually research it.

A. Yes, you're seeing the nastiness of Algol and feeling first hand the rage of repressed feminine power.

re: Bin Laden's death -  Is Osama bin Laden's death on May 1 related to what you said in the April 27 NewsScope?:
"Astrologically, the U.S. is entering a phase of escalating military objectives. On May 1, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter conjoin to make a triple conjunction in the assertive sign of Aries, promoting adventurism, over-confidence and brash boldness. This rare combination is growing in power this week, and is especially significant in U.S. combat zones because it forms a close sextile to the U.S. Mars."

A: Yes, absolutely! It's a very favorable turn for the U.S. military, suggested by the triple conjunction sextile the U.S. Mars. The outer planet Eris is also there, so really it's a quadruple conjunction. They were transiting through the U.S. sixth house of military services.

re: Algol - "The Full Moon on the 17th aligns with Algol, the most evil star in the heavens." Ack! This is my son's 22nd birthday and he's about to graduate from art school and head out on his own. What does this solar return bode for him!? I'm not asking for an in-depth analysis, just a short phrase like "Fasten your seatbelts" or "It's only for one year" or "He's young--He'll get over it." Just a little something to allay fears and let me continue in the hope that he'll find a job! ;-)
response - Every chart is unique, and having the Sun conjunct Algol doesn't tell us much in itself. The Sun may be highly energized by Algol, or if natal outer planets "afflict" the Sun, then you might see some problems. As for the Solar Return on this date, the Sun forms a hard aspect to Saturn, suggesting the task of becoming an adult and entering the real world.
NewsScope for June 13, 2011

Arizona Wildfire

This week transiting Saturn turns direct while only 0º02’ from a challenging aspect to the U.S. Moon, bringing hardship to Americans across the nation, especially economically*. With the U.S. Moon in the 4th house of domestic conditions, we have also seen a variety of extreme weather disasters, including bizarre tornados, record-setting floods, and most recently, wildfires in Arizona.
Arizona’s 8:00 am birth time is from Marc Penfield’s Horoscopes of the Western Hemisphere, and the time he notes is from a Los Angeles Times article.
* The nation’s severe economic downturn was
uniquely forecast in this column in astro-event #3,
and clarified in last week’s NewsScope. This kind of national forecast is possible if and only if one uses the
Scorpio Rising U.S. horoscope
Alec Baldwin,
New York’s Next Mayor?

The sexting scandal involving New York’s Anthony Weiner inevitably removes him as a leading contender to be the next mayor of New York City, making room for “30 Rock” actor Alec Baldwin to consider the job. As Salon magazine notes, “The planets might have just aligned in Alec’s favor.” His Hollywood rep agreed: “I wouldn’t rule it out.”
Syria’s Haves and Have-Nots

Syria’s current political turmoil was astrologically anticipated in NewsScope on April 18, 2011 by looking at President Assad’s and Syria’s horoscopes. Assad’s progressed Mars square Pluto left little doubt that he would authorize “brutal repression of any resistance to his rule”, while Syria’s chart indicated much more trouble to come. Over the weekend, Syrian tanks and helicopter gunships attacked civilians in a cruel escalation of violence.
Arizona’s horoscope (February 14, 1912; 8:00 am; Phoenix, AZ) allows the astrologer to zoom in on this state’s current situation. The natal chart shows the disposition towards devastating fires, with Mars (the natural ruler of fires) squaring Chiron near the Pisces Ascendant. Arizona is now experiencing a Chiron Return, which activates this underlying dynamic. The symbolic equation is easy: wounded by fire.

The previous record for fire damage in Arizona was the Rodeo-Chediski fire which began on June 18, 2002. At the time, Chiron was in Capricorn, where it also activated the natal Chiron-Mars square. The faster-moving Mercury was conjunct Mars, which underscores that the fire was started by an under-employed firefighter who wanted more work. Transiting Neptune conjunct Arizona’s 12th house Mercury verified the arson.

Arizona’s chart is significant for another reason, since Sarah Palin bought a house in Scottsdale last month as a possible campaign headquarters for a 2012 presidential campaign. Arizona’s Pallas, the political strategy asteroid, is in traditional Taurus where it trines a Moon-Venus conjunction in conventional Capricorn. Pallas is now being activated by progressed Venus (orb 0º01’), which denotes a celebrity conservative coming to the state.
Updating Syria’s horoscope (November 13, 1970; 6:08 am; Damascus) begins with a look at the key polarity: the Sun-Venus-Jupiter triple conjunction opposes the Moon-Saturn conjunction. The Sun partnered with the so-called benefics clearly represents the elite - the business and political classes and their offspring. The Moon partnered with austere Saturn represents the common people. This is a clear case of the haves versus the have-nots.

Unlike in Tunisia and Egypt, none of the elites have deserted Assad because they have too much to lose should the common people take over. The competing visions of the future can be seen in the natal Mercury-Neptune conjunction, now being squared by transiting Neptune in Pisces. This configuration also denotes the difficulty in knowing exactly what is happening,
i.e., whether government troops were attacked by civilians, or government soldiers rebelled against shooting peaceful demonstrators.

Transiting Jupiter in Taurus provides material and political assistance to Syria’s people, while transiting Saturn turning direct near the natal Mars-Uranus conjunction is a powerful stimulus to the revolutionary movement. Only outside intervention will convince Assad to step down. External pressure mounts on the recalcitrant president this coming October through February 2012, when transiting Uranus squares Syria’s progressed Sun in early Capricorn.
Theoretically, Alec Baldwin was born with his Aries Sun in the 7th house of partners (April 3, 1958; 6:15 pm*; Massapequa, NY), where it opposes his Libra Moon and Libra Ascendant. Baldwin dramatically improved his Hollywood image when he married Kim Bassinger on August 19, 1993 as his progressed Juno was conjunct his Midheaven, and transiting Jupiter was conjunct his Moon-Ascendant.

The radiant charm he gets from his Libra placements conceals a psychologically intense personality, which is shown by Venus, the ruler of his chart, opposite Pluto. Venus is located in the 5th house of children, and after he and his wife separated in 2000, the intensity was played out in a ferocious custody battle for their child, Ireland. When Saturn entered his 12th house in 2009, he even considered suicide over the matter.
* Alec Baldwin’s birth time is unknown. The 6:15 pm time used here is speculative, but based on many measurements, some of which are included in this brief article.
Looking ahead to 2013, Baldwin’s progressed Sun will be sextile natal Uranus in the 10th house of public service. At the same time, transiting Uranus will be conjunct his Sun, creating a double Sun-Uranus theme and indicating an entirely new life path. Also in 2013, his progressed Mars squares his 3rd house Saturn, pushing him to express his opinions in a larger forum. We’ll see if he has the stomach to wage the tough political fight denoted by this aspect, but the planets are indeed aligning favorably for him to run.
