Obama Scraps Missile Defense in Eastern Europe
Last Thursday, President Obama announced that the U.S. would end its plans to deploy anti-missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic, setting off tectonic shifts in geopolitical alliances. The high-tech, yet-to-be-developed system was originally proposed by the Bush Administration and was explained as targeting Iranian missiles, but the subtext was clearly aimed at holding Russian hegemony at bay.
The importance of Obama's announcement was clear to political astrologers since it took place on the very day that the transiting Sun aligned with the Saturn-Uranus opposition: the Old Guard was dethroned by a New Plan. While Bush strategists decried this development as "caving in to Russian
pressure", Russian leaders responded generously by immediately withdrawing their plans to deploy medium-range missiles in Kalingrad near Poland's border.
Russia's horoscope (June 12, 1990; 1:45 pm; Moscow) reflects the current dynamic shifts. First, the Sun-Saturn-Uranus configuration fell right on Russia's Ascendant-Descendant axis, signaling a sudden change in relationship status. Second, with Virgo Rising, Mercury is the ruler of Russia's modern incarnation. By secondary progression, Mercury is at 8º17' Cancer, exactly (to-the-minute) opposite natal Uranus. This precise connection underscores the unexpected, spontaneous changes now taking place.
Russia's progressed Mars, which is now at 22º Aries, is cause for concern. This Mars is heading into a square with natal Saturn, which will be exact in March 2012. The Mars-Saturn vibe represents a toughness that needs to be watched and parried, since it generally activates the need to be strong and dominant. However, if Russian and American interests can be aligned, it represents an opportunity to reconfigure global military security.

The Rising Rant
The current cover story in Time magazine features controversial political commentator Glenn Beck, a "mad man" with a gift for exploiting fear and paranoia. "He is the hottest thing in the political-rant racket, left or right." Unmentioned in the Time piece is that Beck called Obama a racist during his FoxTV segment, which resulted in a massive advertiser boycott.
Glenn Beck was born with his Aquarius Sun conjunct Mars and Saturn (February 10, 1964; Mount Vernon, WA; time unknown), giving him the same anger and control issues as Sarah Palin, who was born the day after Beck. Typical of the socially-minded Aquarian, both have turned their personal angst into large-scale issues. Since their Sun-Mars-Saturn is also conjunct the U.S. Moon, they have both reached a national audience.
In the broader celestial scheme, the outer planets Saturn, Uranus and Pluto are now entering into a T-square formation. Last week Saturn and Uranus were exactly opposite, and now Saturn is advancing into its first square with Pluto, becoming exact on November 15. As detailed by Richard Tarnas in Cosmos and Psyche, Saturn-Pluto combinations are historically associated with the empowerment of conservatism, often accompanied by totalitarian impulses, organized violence, and oppression.
In the U.S., we can anticipate a rise in angry reactionaries who oppose the Uranian changes espoused by Team Obama. The last time Saturn, Uranus and Pluto were dynamically aligned was in the mid-1960s, when the Uranus-Pluto conjunction opposed Saturn. At the time, profound social and political unrest was experienced throughout the global village. We can expect no less this time around....
Stephanie Meyer's New Moon
Two months before its November 20 debut, New Moon – the second film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's best-selling romance-vampire books – is already sold out in online presales. Last month, USA Today noted that Meyer broke J.K. Rowling's record on their bestseller list, while Forbes magazine listed her at #5 on their list of "Hollywood's Most Influential Women".
Stephanie Meyer was born during the New Moon in Capricorn (December 24, 1973; Hartford, CT; time unknown), a rather conservative placement that finds fulfillment through ambition, responsibility and duty. These qualities are underscored by the opposition to Saturn and given an interest in power and the supernatural by the square to Pluto.
As a self-acclaimed "strait-laced Mormon", many of the traditional vampire themes are overlooked in favor of chaste love. Her natal Venus is well aspected by being conjunct Jupiter and sextile Neptune, undoubtedly inspiring an interest in love stories,
as well as contributing to her annual earnings exceeding $50 million. Venus also forms a hard aspect to Pluto, which adds elements of obsession, lust and betrayal in the relationship department, plus a keen interest in accumulating wealth.
Currently, Meyer's progressed Sun is nearly conjunct her natal Venus. In traditional astrology, this alignment corresponds to finding one's true love in life. Since Meyer is already married, one might assume that other facets of Venus will become illuminated, such as her growing celebrity and financial abundance. One thing for sure is that New Moon will be a huge success. Coincidentally, New Moon opens as the transiting Saturn-Pluto square activates her natal New Moon.
