"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

re: Occupy Wall Street - Got your analysis of the NY protests. Thought this "manifesto" that is beginning to form may be of interest to you, in light of your comments that it's loose and not formed yet:

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City
This document was accepted by the NYC General Assembly on September 29, 2011

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.

They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.

They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.

They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.

They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.

They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.

They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.

They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.

They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad. They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.

They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts. *

To the people of the world, we, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

Join us and make your voices heard!

Occupy Wall Street

The Arab Spring came to New York recently when a diverse group of individuals began protesting against corporate greed. Occupy Wall Street is now in its third week, as thousands have flooded into lower Manhattan to set up camp and stage rallies. Until last weekend’s arrest of 700 protesters, the mainstream media has largely ignored this movement and its expanding social networks.*

Astrologically, mass protest movements are characteristic of the Uranus-Pluto cycle, which we are now entering. The last time Uranus and Pluto formed a hard aspect was the conjunction back in the revolutionary 1960s. Uranus was exactly squaring the U.S. Venus when Occupy Wall Street began on September 17. In the U.S. horoscope, Venus (associated with money) is in the 8th house of capitalism where it naturally symbolizes corporate wealth.
Watch the transit of Mars into the Uranus-Pluto square to activate and energize these kinds of movements. Participation was rapidly dwindling a few days after the original occupation began, but when Mars entered Leo on September 19, celebrity rabble-rouser Michael Moore showed up to give encouragement. By the time Mars was trine Uranus and quincunx Pluto, the protests turned mildly violent and Youtube videos of police brutality led to sympathetic rallies in Chicago and Los Angeles.

Transiting Neptune’s ongoing challenging aspect to the U.S. Sun has brought confusion and uncertainty about leadership issues on many levels. Neptune’s influence within the protest group has brought no leader and no clear demands – just an expressive mistrust of the corporatocracy. However, on October 6, massive rallies are scheduled in many American cities during a Mercury-Saturn conjunction, which should create a more focused and serious message. And we are only just entering the paradigm shifting Uranus-Pluto cycle.
Mahatma Gandhi and the Strategy
of Non-Violent Resistance

Non-violent resistance has played a critical role in successful socio-political transitions. From the anti-Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, to the Arab revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, non-violent resistance has proven to be an effective use of people power. The tactic was popularized by Mahatma Gandhi in winning India’s independence from British rule.
Born as Mohandas Gandhi with his Libra Sun hidden away in the 12th house (October 2, 1869; 7:45 am; Porbandar, India), Gandhi naturally took to self-sacrifice to achieve his goals. The 12th house Sun led to frequent stretches of imprisonment for his leadership role against the British colonial power, and long periods of fasting for self-purification and as a protest tactic. With Mercury conjunct his Scorpio Ascendant, he presented himself as the voice for fundamental change.

The most prominent planet in his chart is the Moon in Leo, located in the 10th house of public image. The Moon is given spiritual and creative inspiration by its trine to Neptune, and respect and leadership qualities by the trine to Saturn. The Moon is also under tremendous pressure by its square to a Mars-Pluto opposition, perhaps one of the most violent configurations known to astrologers.
According to the Indian guru Osho, Gandhi’s violence was subtle. He turned his anger against himself by going on a life-threatening fast, or using clever tactics that evoked others’ wrath against him. In this way, he would torture others by torturing himself. It worked and has been emulated in social protest movements ever since. His proud Leo Moon made India proud of herself. His birthday, October 2, is now commemorated worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Al Capone, Celebrity Gangster

Ken Burns’ latest documentary “Prohibition” reminds us why Al Capone is the world’s most famous gangster. Capone’s underworld control of Chicago bootlegging, prostitution and gambling cleared an estimated $100 million per year in the late 1920s. Yet Capone’s flamboyant lifestyle brought him tremendous media attention where he promoted himself as a businessman giving the people what they wanted.
Al Capone was born with his Sun in the organizational sign of Capricorn (January 17, 1899; 9:30 am*; Brooklyn, NY), where it squares an Aries Moon and opposes Mars in Cancer. This dynamic T-square, linking the turf-oriented Mars and the steamroller combination of Aries-Capricorn, instinctively resorts to violence when conflict brews. Capone’s T-square is closely aligned with the U.S. Pluto, reflecting how he personified the negative traits of this planet.

Pluto was discovered while Capone was the kingpin of Chicago’s crime family. With Pluto squaring his Pisces Ascendant, this new planet imprinted its significance on Capone’s personality, creating a controlling, dominating tyrant. Pluto opposes Venus, the planet ruling pleasure. Capone empowered himself by supplying the illegal substances and activities that people craved. In so doing, he helped shape astrologers’ definition of what Pluto represents.
Capone’s Jupiter at 8º Scorpio is exactly conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, a connection which not only made him famous in his own time, but as a cinematic anti-hero ever since. Dozens of leading men have played him, including Al Pacino, Ben Gazzara, Jason Robards, George Raft, Lee J. Cobb, and on and on… Now, as transiting Jupiter - in retro mode at 8º Taurus - opposes his natal Jupiter, Ken Burns brings his notoriety back to life.
* Capone’s birth time is rated DD. Sources are conflicting. ADB notes: "Church of Light quotes Julie Baum in AFA, 4/1975. PC quotes Drew for January 17, 1899, 6:00 AM and states that AFA gives 12:17 PM."
