"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Berlusconi - good piece on Berlusconi ---- "He personifies all things Neptunian, which is to say, glamor, charm, scandal, dicey policies, and false promises." Of course, he started his career as a crooner on cruise ships - how Neptunian is that!

Boo - I don't like this two-segment issue. I like three. :(   I understand that these two bits get to be extra meaty, but I feel like I'm missing out on something. boo

Rick Perry - As you said last week, Obama may face Perry or Romney. What does the "birthtime" announcement of Perry's candidacy add to that idea? And, how does John Huntsman now fit into the scheme of things, since an item you sent out a few weeks ago seemed to say that he has the strongest birth chart compared to the U.S. chart? Could any 2 out of 3 of these form a Prez/VEEP ticket combo?

Vietnam - You're the top: your analysis are superb, especially the politics and economic issues. I love history and as for Vietnam war and such tragic period in American history, I wish you would make some analysis on it. I watched "Path to war" from HBO and it is so impressive, so well played and directed and awakening so much about that. Could you please make an astro analysis about that? Thank you and best compliments to your marvellous site and work!

The U.S. Moon - I love to read your column because you do such superb work and the 8º Scorpio chart works beautifully for your predictions. But I've been watching the 28º Aqu point as the US Moon for several years now and I'm convinced this is the degree. A few pieces of data just off the top of my head: Space Shuttle Crash when Uranus transit 28º Aqu. Last big national blackout when Jupiter in Leo opposed at 27º and some degrees Leo. Oil rig disaster when Neptune transit 28º Aqu last time.

A. Yes, 28º AQ does seem like a critical point. Did you know that 28ºAQ12' is exactly trioctile (sesquiquadrate) the U.S. Sun at 13ºCN12'?

"Italy is the largest issuer of government bonds among Eurozone economies and its 10-year Bond yields shot up alarmingly, again to its highest in recent history. And if rates exceed 6%, Italy will start experiencing the same repayment and new debt raising problems as others."

GOP Field Update

Following the Iowa debate and straw poll, the GOP field is narrowing. Here’s a brief survey of those most likely to win the nomination, based on natal or progressed planets in aspect to the U.S. Moon (25º 28’ Aquarius). Without this connection, the candidate won’t find popular support.

Michele Bachmann (April 6, 1956; 12:08 am; Waterloo, IO) has no natal or progressed planets at 25º of any sign. Over the last month, her progressed Moon was at 25º Aquarius, which allowed her to win the Iowa contest. But that’s now in the past, and there’s nothing left for her to do but make a lot of noise.

If Rick Perry’s 10:40 am birth time* is correct (March 4, 1950; Haskell, TX), his natal Mercury is at 24º 50’ Aquarius, close enough for him to be a contender, but too far away to win. By secondary progression, his Moon was at 25º Sagittarius last week, perfectly sextile the U.S. Moon. But this too is a passing phenomenon. With his progressed Mercury retrograde and conjunct his Taurus Ascendant, he may become best known for his foolish, brash statements.
Ron Paul (August 20, 1935; Pittsburgh, PA; time unknown) came in second in Iowa, making the philosophical godfather of the Tea Party noteworthy. His Leo Sun opposes the U.S. Moon, but the orb is too wide to make him a winner. If he was born around noon, his progressed Venus would be at 25º 27’ Virgo, forming a perfect quincunx to the U.S. Moon. But this would fade in the coming months.

Sarah Palin (with rectified birth time of 4:55 pm) has natal Saturn at 25º Aquarius and her progressed Venus at 25º Taurus, just past the square to natal Saturn. Under the harsh reality of this aspect, she may have concluded that she can’t win. Still, her natal Saturn holds some sway throughout this election cycle.
The clear leader, both astrologically and among the punditocracy, is Mitt Romney (March 12, 1947; 9:51 am; Detroit, MI). Although he has no natal planets at 25º, by secondary progression all five (!) of his personal planets are within a degree of aspecting the U.S. Moon. A year from now, all these will have moved on, except his progressed Sun in Taurus. By Election Day it’s only 0º03’ from squaring the U.S. Moon. Unless someone new enters the race soon, he looks like the candidate.
Italy Fuels Fears of Contagion

When the outer planets enter a new sign, we often get historic events marking the occasion. Pluto’s entrance into Capricorn in November 2008 had a clear connection with the sudden and catastrophic collapse of major financial institutions. When Uranus entered Aries last March, the “Arab Spring” was just beginning. Neptune’s entrance into Pisces in April 2011 didn’t bring such an obvious event, although in retrospect, the debt crisis in Greece resonated with the uncertainty and lack of leadership we associate with Neptune.

The pervasive quality of uncertainty has been underscored over the last month since Mercury turned retrograde while opposing Neptune. This combination has been felt around the globe, as market volatility spread from Asia to Europe to the U.S. in a closed loop of negative feedback. Since the U.S. is simultaneously experiencing its Saturn Return, the financial and political uncertainty is not only about domestic institutions, but also exposure to Europe’s worrisome situation.
Recently, Italy’s huge debt (120% of GDP) has contributed the most to Europe’s uncertainty, since Italy has the third largest bond market in the world after the U.S. and Japan. A full-blown debt crisis in Italy would be catastrophic. Italy’s horoscope (June 10, 1946; 6:05 pm; Rome) features a Sun-Uranus conjunction in the 8th house of debt and credit, an eccentric, changeable combination if ever there was one.

The Sun is well protected by trines to Jupiter and Ceres, which can be seen as an insular system of political patronage. More alarming is Mercury’s position in the 8th house, which squares evasive, muddled Neptune. As the ruler of the Virgo Midheaven, Mercury here leads to important economic policies that are often characterized as “smoke and mirrors”.

President Silvio Berlusconi (September 29, 1936; 6:00 am; Milan) has a direct connection with Italy’s Mercury-Neptune square, since his Libra Sun is exactly conjunct Italy’s Neptune (orb 0º01’). He personifies all things Neptunian, which is to say, glamor, charm, scandal, dicey policies, and false promises. The transiting Uranus-Pluto dynamic has hit both Berlusconi’s Sun and Italy’s Neptune, leading to a crisis of confidence about Italy’s bond market.

Berlusconi’s Mars is conjunct Italy’s Midheaven at 1º Virgo, the place where Mercury made its recent retrograde station. Mercury returns to this area around September 8-9, possibly leading to a key financial event at this time, perhaps another reassurance from Berlusconi. Meanwhile, transiting Neptune remains in a long-term opposition to this point as it passes back and forth over Italy’s 4th house cusp. This promises to keep domestic conditions in a prolonged state of uncertainty, which in turn, fuels fears of contagion across the global financial markets.
