"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Rick Perry - As you said last week, Obama may face Perry or Romney. What does the "birthtime" announcement of Perry's candidacy add to that idea? And, how does John Huntsman now fit into the scheme of things, since an item you sent out a few weeks ago seemed to say that he has the strongest birth chart compared to the U.S. chart? Could any 2 out of 3 of these form a Prez/VEEP ticket combo?

Obama - I voted for and personally like President Obama but as a left-of-center Democrat I am very disappointed that he continually waits until the last minute to appease his (right-wing) enemies.  And then......he caves in every time to the right wingers.  Does the future hold any change in the President's passivity?

A. - Have a look at Obama's Solar Return. Mars rising tells us that he'll be forced to get much tougher, even though it now seems that's against his nature.

The U.S. Moon - I love to read your column because you do such superb work and the 8º Scorpio chart works beautifully for your predictions. But I've been watching the 28º Aqu point as the US Moon for several years now and I'm convinced this is the degree. A few pieces of data just off the top of my head: Space Shuttle Crash when Uranus transit 28º Aqu. Last big national blackout when Jupiter in Leo opposed at 27º and some degrees Leo. Oil rig disaster when Neptune transit 28º Aqu last time.

A. Yes, 28º AQ does seem like a critical point. Did you know that 28ºAQ12' is exactly trioctile (sesquiquadrate) the U.S. Sun at 13ºCN12'? However, the many predictions made here and action around 25º AQ are too numerous to be coincidental. Here's a couple of recent items in case you missed them:

NewsScope; June 6, 2011 - Pluto’s long-term opposition to the U.S. 8th house Jupiter is also in play now, and can be seen as a challenge to America’s good credit rating. The ferocity of the debate will likely escalate as we near the deadline, since transiting Mars and Pluto oppose each other on August 11, well past the deadline. However, there is some hope that a deal will be reached on August 1 when the Sun squares Jupiter and both align with the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant

NewsScope; June 27, 2011 - Huntsman was born during the New Moon in Aries (March 26, 1960; Palo Alto, CA; time unknown), which makes Mars his Sun sign’s ruling planet. His Mars is located at 25º Aquarius, exactly conjunct the U.S. Moon at 25º Aquarius. Americans like politicians with Mars in this precise zodiacal degree – Ronald Reagan was elected when his progressed Mars was at 25º Aquarius, and both Jimmy Carter and George Bush (senior) have Mars at 25º Aquarius.

Huntsman’s Neptune is found at 8º Scorpio, which happens to perfectly align with the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. Barack Obama, though he was born over a year after Huntsman, has Neptune in the exact same location (with both Neptunes within 0º01’ of conjoining the U.S. Ascendant). The candidate’s Neptune provides the promise of hope for a better future, and increases his sensitivity to what the nation needs.

Rick Perry Shakes Up the GOP Field

Governor Rick Perry announced his run for the presidency last Saturday during a Mercury retrograde phase, leading to a vast re-thinking of the 2012 contest. And if his speculative birth time of 6:30 pm is correct (see NewsScope; August 1, 2011), then he entered the race precisely as his progressed Moon entered Capricorn, marking the beginning of a highly organized campaign.
Over the next two months, his progressed Moon will oppose his 10th house Uranus, so that the air waves crackle with excitement about his candidacy. What makes Perry a strong national contender are the many close ties that his planets have to the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope. Mercury, the ruler of his chart, is at 25º Aquarius, closely conjunct the U.S. Moon. This will give him plenty of popular support.

His 12th house Pluto sits right on the U.S. Midheaven, perhaps reflecting his not-so-hidden affinity with the American plutocracy, which has a keen interest in supporting him financially. Pluto opposes his Mercury-Jupiter conjunction, a signature for vocal or expressive religious fundamentalism. Since this combination squares Pallas (the political strategy asteroid), his evangelical path will likely become a dynamic variable during this campaign.
Perry’s natal Mars-Uranus square will be dramatically awakened over the coming year by the transiting Uranus-Pluto square. This alignment promises to foment much anger, turmoil and conflict during the campaign. Perhaps it’s fitting that the intense ideological battle over the role of government should come down to Obama and Perry. However, the inherent radical nature of Mars-Uranus may be too extreme for the electorate. It’s both an asset and a liability - but these are radical times.
The Re-structuring of the Global Economy

A reader asks, “I just read about Obama’s solar return in 2012 boding well for his re-election. I hope that means the economy is finally going to improve. Do you see that happening?” You’re right to associate Obama’s re-election with an improving economy. If the employment rate spikes up, or the overall trend seems to be improving, Obama is a shoo-in. If the economy tanks, Obama will lose.
The problem with this perspective is that it’s backwards. What we need is an astrological analysis of the economy to predict Obama’s re-election chances, rather than an analysis of Obama’s chart to predict the economy. An extreme example will help illustrate how this works. If you look at the 15,000 horoscopes of the people who died during the Japanese earthquake, you won’t see disaster in each chart. However, Japan’s horoscope clearly reflected such a disaster.

Unfortunately, the epochal Uranus-Pluto square shaping up will likely bring periodic spasms to the economic order. It’s a wildcard. As we saw over this past week, extreme volatility in the U.S. stock market created spectacular ripples across our global village as Mars activated the Uranus-Pluto square. Over the next four years, this Uranus-Pluto square will hit the charts of all the major economic powers, which suggests stormy weather ahead in the international marketplace.
While some astrologers believe that 2012 will usher in the collapse of “predatory capitalism”,* it may also force the economic powers to coordinate their agendas. As things stand now, the global economy is like an orchestra without a conductor, with each national economy pursuing its own welfare. As we saw in Greece, Wisconsin, and London, ending government entitlements leads to rioting in the streets. The Uranus-Pluto vibe carries a high degree of social unrest, and we’re only witnessing the opening scenes of what’s bound to bring a major re-structuring of the global economy.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes

According to classic astrologers, Mercury is tremendously weakened when retrograde or in Pisces, the sign of its “fall”. Modern day political astrologers would be well advised to look beyond these overly simplistic 17th century rules. Case in point: Planet of the Apes made its world premiere on February 8, 1968 when Mercury was both retrograde and in Pisces, and it became one of the most popular sci-fi flicks in modern times.

A horoscope for this premiere (set for New York, NY; noon) can be used to map the Ape franchise. Mercury retrograde in Pisces squares Neptune, underscoring the plot’s highly imaginative fantasy world and its ability to make us re-think our assumptions about our own world. As befits Mercury retrograde, the social hierarchy is reversed, with intelligent apes ruling over dumb humans.
Planet of the Apes appeared during the epochal Uranus-Pluto conjunction, which itself is about revolutionary social upheaval. Mars opposite Uranus-Pluto energized the sense of class warfare. That same planetary trio (Mars-Uranus-Pluto) was in effect on August 5, 2011 when Rise of the Planet of the Apes premiered to unexpected popularity and critical acclaim. And like the original film, the current extravaganza debuted while Mercury was retrograde and in a challenging aspect to Neptune.

Vesta was in Aquarius and in close aspect to the Sun during both premieres. Vesta in Aquarius focuses on the humanitarian, social and political angles of the films, while the Sun represents the heroes who personify these ideals. In 1968 the Sun-Vesta conjunction in Aquarius satirized the foibles of the reigning ape class. In 2011 the Leo Sun opposite Vesta symbolizes the rise of the überchimp Caesar in conflict with the governing human society. Either way, we come away questioning our presumptions about the durability of the existing social order.
