Andrew Weil, the Alternative Healer
NewsScope, May 12, 1997

Last week alternative healer Andrew Weil graced the cover of Time magazine. The bold heading declared that this "Medicine Man has made New Age remedies popular," and asks the burning question: is it Sound Advice or Snake Oil? Now that traditional medicine is in disarray because of exploding costs, millions of Americans are turning to nutrition, lifestyle changes, and other non-invasive, natural techniques to maintain health.

Astrologically, Chiron is associated with alternative medicine and its practitioners. Last week transiting Chiron was exactly square the U.S. Pluto, reflecting the profound and widespread recognition of both Dr. Weil and alternative healing as a growing and legitimate movement. Chiron is a bit of a maverick, and Weil has long lived on the fringe of traditional medicine, slowly making inroads into consensus reality with his natural health books.

The American Medical Association (A.M.A.) and most doctors belittle nutrition and other alternative techniques - a cursory examination of any hospital lunch menu can confirm that. When Chiron squares Pluto, as it did last week, the battle between knowledge of the mind/body connection (symbolized by Chiron) and the corporate powers (Pluto in Capricorn) emerges in full public view.

Astrology itself is closely associated with Chiron, as long as it employs the mind/body connection. Sun Signs are only a fraction of the horoscope picture. But when astrology goes beyond the entertainment value of Sun Signs, it becomes part of the New Age awareness that sees our collective reality as a holistic universe.

Andrew Weil was born with Chiron in the tenth house of career, where it's intensified by a conjunction with Pluto. He made the cover of Time as transiting Chiron squared the U.S. Pluto
Deepak Chopra, Holistic Metaphysician

Deepak Chopra was born with his Libra Sun conjunct Chiron (October 22, 1946; 3:45 pm; New Delhi, India).  The Sun-Chiron link describes the path to self-fulfillment as a healer—not in the traditional sense of the medical doctor, but one that practices the mind-body connection. In 1984 when transiting Pluto passed over his Sun-Chiron he left his medical practice, took up meditation, and changed his life.

Since then he has gone on to write 40 books and electrify the New Age, mind-body movement. With Uranus, the planet of revolution, exactly conjunct his Fourth House cusp, Chopra's psyche is grounded in a need for dynamic, fundamental change from traditional pathways. Ignoring this psychological need leads to tremendous anxiety. The healthy expression of this placement comes from being a global citizen.
"You are the totality of the universe acting through a human nervous system. You came from a source that was never born and will never die. And you are here to create the world in every moment."
-- Deepak Chopra
The 14th Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama's horoscope shows a powerful dichotomy between what might be called a cosmic blessing and a pattern of victimization and violence. According to his mother's account, the Dalai Lama was born just before sunrise (July 6, 1935; Tengstar, Tibet), attended by auspicious signs and omens indicating he was the reincarnation of a prominent holy man. His birth chart likewise shows many signs of a spiritual life, but primarily by the positions of Jupiter and Saturn and their harmonious links to the Sun.

Saturn, the planet symbolizing authority, is found in the Ninth House of religion, and is given mystical tendencies by being in otherworldly Pisces. Saturn's position translates into the easy assumption of religious authority by being in a favorable 120-degree angle (trine) to the Sun. The Sun is also trine Jupiter, the planet naturally associated with religion, which in turn is trine to Saturn.

Together, these three planets create what astrologers call a grand trine. The Dalai Lama's grand trine is a cosmic blessing denoting wisdom, mastery of inner silence and spiritual protection. Jupiter and Saturn, the biggest planets in the solar system, are also symbolic of larger social and political issues. Their relationship with the Dalai Lama's Sun (personal identity) strongly links his personal destiny with the cause of his nation.

The fourteenth Dalai Lama's chart reflects the oppressive tension concurrent with the thirteenth Dalai Lama's exit and the tenuous circumstances of Tibet's independence: Pluto is conjunct the Moon's South Node. The record shows that the thirteenth Dalai Lama was born in 1876 and died on December 17, 1933 after a life-long struggle to maintain Tibetan independence from China. The thirteenth Dalai Lama was forced into exile twice and survived invasions from both British and Chinese armies. Just before he died, the Chinese communist army was poised for another, final invasion.

The Moon represents one's instinctive responses to daily life. The Dalai Lama was born with the Moon in the modest and service-oriented sign of Virgo. The typical "dryness" of Virgo, however, is strongly modified by the close conjunction of Neptune with the Moon. This idealistic and spiritually sensitive planet perfectly reflects the compassion for which the Dalai Lama is known. Neptune with the Moon also symbolizes the orphan or abandoned one. Over 40 years in exile make this an essential theme of his life.

Restrictive Saturn opposes the Moon-Neptune conjunction from the Ninth House, while Chiron squares it from the twelfth house. While these stressful aspects to his Moon are signs of exile, they also led to a wider distribution of Tibetan Buddhist teaching than would have occured without the Chinese invasion. That something positive could come out of something so negative corresponds perfectly with the non-judgmental nature of these teachings. We learn, then, that valuable lessons can come in many forms.

The Dalai Lama's Moon squares Chiron in the twelfth house, a sign of exile from one's homeland and deep-seated feelings of woundedness. The same placement reflects the empathy and compassion he feels for others with similar emotional wounds.
"Why are some individuals so outwardly altered by time and others not? Or, in other words, why is there often a discrepancy between chronological age and biological age? I believe the answer has to do with complex interactions of genetics and environment. I also believe, on the basis of evidence I have reviewed, we actually have control over some of those factors."

"I urge you to follow a diet that I believe can increase the probability of healthy aging, but I hesitate even to call it a diet. It is absolutely not intended as a weight-loss program, nor is it an eating plan to stay on for a limited period of time. Rather, it is the nutritional component of a healthy lifestyle."
- Andrew Weil, Aging Naturally
"Whether one believes in a religion or not,
and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate kindness and compassion."
"The mind's own basic nature is ultimately neutral.  It can be influenced by negative as well as by positive emotions.  Take, for instance, those who have a short tempter.  When I was young I was quite short-tempered.  However, the mood never lasted for twenty-four hours.  If negative emotions are in the very nature of our mind, then as long as the mind is functioning the anger must remain. That, however is not the case.  Similarly, positive emotions are also not in the nature of the mind.  The mind is something neutral, reflecting all sorts of different experiences or phenomena."

-- His Holiness the Dalai Lama,
from Live in a Better Way:  Reflections on Truth, Love and Happiness
“There are no extra pieces in the universe. Everyone is here because he or she has a place to fill, and every piece must fit itself into the big jigsaw puzzle.”
“Whatever relationships you have attracted in your life at this moment, are precisely the ones you need in your life at this moment. There is a hidden meaning behind all events, and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution.”  -- DC
Since Chiron's discovery in 1977, astrologers have equated this celestial object with alternative healing practices, especially those that relate to the mind/body connection. Here's three well-known healers who have left or been forced out of their comfort zones due to the strong presence of Chiron in their natal horoscopes.
